Day 6
Told by: Emma Gudrian and Corinne Troccoli
Another day, another walk around London! No coffee stop today, we had to get to our destination quickly.
Our first stop was The Partners, we knew we were going to enjoy the firm and very excited to start our day here.
We ended up meeting a group of design students from Arizona University, who also were there to talk with The Partners.
Rosey and Steven talked about what The Partner's do as a firm, and what we should expect in the design industry. They had their own quirky way of explaining things.
We enjoyed our time there and learned a lot about the design industry. Some of us wished we had our resumes in hand!
Emma needed to get a selfie in front of their book cover.
After the talk the strose cat accompanied Corinne as we were on our way to the magazine shop!
One thing that is culturally different when walking around are the buildings. In the U.S. we don't have as many buildings from the 1600s still standing. London is layered with historic culture, mixed with modern day architecture which brings this historic vibe. It's quite enjoyable walking through history and going into Pubs that have still kept it's 1800s charm.
Our next stop was Chris St. Cyr's recommendation, which was the shop MagCulture. The students looked around and bought very beautiful and well-crafted magazines.
Chris was extremely happy to have expanded his collection and a lot of the students were also able to expand thier libraries.
An example is this Positive Magazine Issue (we are not surprised Emma bought this one).
As we walked from destination to destination, we encountered some interesting designs. Emma took a picture of this building with an etching illustration.
While walking along to the next stop on our journey, Corinne spotted an excellent piece of design in a barber shop window. We loved how the text was incorporated into the image and how well it represented the shop. It was a very simple yet elegant design.
Emma spotted this elegent and playful logo across the street. She loved how the letterforms are loose but aren't so loose that you can't read it. She does however think the tail on the third "T" didn't need to be seperate from the decorative lines on the bottom.
We had some time before our next design firm, so we broke up into groups and explored around town. We encountered some interesting wall art that caught the attention of all of us.
Some of us had "interesting" side alley adventures with Chris during that time. Let's just say they saw some London subculture.
Bibliotheque was a small firm that was gracious enough to talk with us. They have designed for some major companies and it was interesting to see all the clients they work with.
Our last adventure of the day was the London Eye, we convinced Chris to spend the evening with us, and it was fun to help him with his fear of heights.
Here we all are! What a lovely crew!
We took some amazing photos while we were on the ride. We got on the London Eye at the right time, not only because they were closing ten minutes before getting our tickets, but the sun was just setting and the city lights were turning on. What an amazing experience!
For dinner, we found a nice pub down the street from Big Ben and spent some time enjoying each other's company. Pubs in London are quite common making them an excellent place for people to socialize after work. You can find locals here around 5 every night for their nightly drinks. Pubs also make some great food that we were able to enjoy, this is a cultural aspect of London that we can't complain about.
To be continued!
